As a heuristic, this is a simplified visual representation of a complex process, which in this case is sustainable development. This representation includes stages that may offer suggestive ease for the direction of thought towards the creation of projects with more sustainable outcomes.

Though the heuristic may considerably present the Diagnose and Evaluate stages as beginning and concluding points, respectively, it is acknowledged that projects can be found in the midst of any of these stages and therefore it is not always necessary to start with ‘Diagnose’ in this regard.

Furthermore, the Evaluate stage does not necessarily have to be a project’s concluding stage, as when a project reaches this stage it may be revealed that the project will need amendments or adjustments and therefore it would be appropriate to reenter the design stage to account for these amendments or adjustments.

Lastly, the heuristic presents the ability to follow this process non-linearly, for example:

• It may be appropriate to return to the Diagnose stage after the Design stage has begun to account for amendments or adjustments newly realized after Design has begun.

• It may be appropriate to return to the Design stage from a minor Implement stage for project prototyping.

• Or it may be appropriate to reference the Evaluate stages of prior projects to support the design of the developing project.
